Television camera directors

For some time now while watching television I have become furiously frustrated with some of the shots on the screen, such as; on variety shows they show DANCERS from the waist up, shots of the audience, all this while the artist is performing. Another thing, those split second shots, flick flick flick the screen is sending my eyeballs spinning in my head. No time to take in what is happening there. Is someone trying to be too arty farty or what?

During a rugby match the camera dwells on the back of a player's head as he walks down the pitch, we see endless shots of the crowd, or the manager. All this and more while the match goes on.

Alright, this is new to me so I'm using it to have a bit of a moan, and there's lots more where this came from, but I'll leave it for now.
